When you meet Danah Flanagan, you immediately sense the depth of her heart. A hospice and palliative care social worker, she walks beside families during some of life’s most difficult moments, offering guidance, empathy, and peace. It is work that demands a special balance of compassion and courage, and for Danah, it is a calling shaped by faith, family, and purpose.
“I think I’ve always been an old soul and wanted to help people,” she said. “My mom was a special education teacher, and she instilled in us early on the importance of helping others, celebrating differences, and never judging someone because of a disability, whether you can see it or not.”
Born in Statesboro, Georgia, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Danah grew up volunteering alongside her mother, often spending days off from school helping in special education classrooms. “I actually thought I was going to be a special ed teacher,” she said. “Those experiences really planted the seed that I’d do something to help people.”
After earning her undergraduate degree in social work, Danah began internships in hospital settings. It was during that time that a course called Death and Dying helped her see end-of-life care in a new way. “I was young and afraid of death, like most people are,” she said. “But I had a wonderful professor who helped me see the beauty in being present for others during that time. That’s when I first realized it might be something I was called to do.”
Still, Danah didn’t expect hospice work to become her life’s purpose. “At the time, I was working in domestic violence and just felt something stirring,” she said. “I prayed about it and asked God to show me what was next. Then a position in hospice came up, and from the moment I interviewed, I just knew. Everything clicked. I knew that’s where I was supposed to be.”
Through the years, Danah has found meaning in helping patients and families navigate what she calls “sacred moments,” times when life and death meet and love becomes the bridge. “People often ask how I can work around death every day,” she said. “But I’ve learned so much about life through it. Families teach me about love, strength, and faith. I’ve had some of the best laughs and deepest connections with people who were dying. My faith has only grown stronger because of what I’ve witnessed at the bedside.”
While her work is fulfilling, it also carries an emotional weight. To stay balanced, Danah has learned the importance of self-care. “Social workers give and give, and sometimes we forget about ourselves,” she said. “That’s why I had to find something outside of work that fed my spirit.”
That something became Danah’s Custom Creations, LLC, a creative business that began as a personal outlet and evolved into a source of encouragement for others.
Creating Through Faith and Purpose
“Most of what I create centers around empowerment, faith, and culture,” she said. “I make things that will make people smile or feel inspired.” Her offerings range from tote bags and tumblers to T-shirts, journals, and paint kits, each piece reflecting her passion for positivity and connection.
Her business motto, “Where vision and creativity come together,” perfectly captures her approach. “It might be my vision for something I feel led to create, or a customer’s idea that we bring to life together,” Danah said. “Either way, the goal is to make something tangible and meaningful that uplifts the person receiving it.”
Danah’s creative work also reflects her heart for social causes. Having worked in domestic violence services and with Alzheimer’s patients, and as the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, she often partners with organizations to create products and fundraisers that raise awareness and hope. “I incorporate all of that into my business because it’s part of who I am,” she said.
Through her art, Danah continues to find perspective. “If I just sat home and watched the news, I’d need some serious therapy,” she said with a laugh. “Being out in the community gives me hope. Conversations with people remind me that we’re more alike than different. We all want to see positive change and be part of something good.”
Her creative side has also helped her build new relationships since moving to Huntsville. “I’ve met so many people and organizations through my business,” she said. “It’s opened doors and helped me feel connected.”
A Life of Presence and Love
When asked who’s been the strongest influence in her life, Danah smiled. “Definitely my mom,” she said. “She’s my sidekick in the business and has always been a guiding force in who I am and what I do.”
The lessons Danah hopes others take from her example are simple yet powerful. “Stop and be present,” she said. “There’s so much noise in the world, and it’s easy to miss the beauty around us. Listening, really listening, matters. Love matters. When we meet people where they are, we find common ground and unity even in hard places.”
Her advice for those feeling called to serve others is to start small. “Volunteer and find what resonates with you,” she said. “Have a mentor you can lean on, especially in emotional fields like hospice. You need people to talk to and learn from.”
And for anyone facing loss or grief, her message is one of reassurance. “You don’t have to walk that journey alone,” she said. “You can seek help and let others walk beside you.”
For Danah, whether through her professional work or her creative projects, the goal is the same, to make a difference in someone’s life.
“Through hospice care, I see the power of presence and empathy,” she said. “Through my creations, I see the power of hope and joy. Both are ways of loving people well.”
